Under the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), every shipping company is required to appoint a company security officer, who takes care of the ship's safety and security.
He is responsible for:
- Carrying out the ship security plan (SSA) in an efficient manner.
- Arranging internal audits and reviews of security activities.
- Measures to enhance security awareness and vigilance among ship personnel.
- Arranging initial and subsequent verifications of the ship through the administration or the recognized security organization.
- Ensuring that adequate training is provided to those responsible for the security of the ship.
- Ensuring consistency between security requirements and safety requirements of the ship.
